"Veteran Luis Rodriguez of Miami came back from a 1st round knockdown to score a controversial split decision Tuesday night over hard-swinging Irish Bobby Cassidy of New York. Cassidy caught the former welterweight champ with a left hook that sent Rodriguez to the deck for a mandatory eight count in the 1st round. The Cuban-born Rodriguez piled up points with rights and combinations in the middle rounds against his southpaw opponent. Cassidy came out swinging in the 9th and 10th rounds but was unable to earn the decision. The decision was cheered by Rodriguez' loyal Latin fans from the Miami area but booed by several hundred other spectators among the crowd of 3,000 at Miami Beach Auditorium." -United Press International
