"Luis Rodriguez scored flash knockdowns in the 1st and last rounds to earn a unanimous 10 round decision over dangerous Jimmy Lester at the Oakland Arena. Rodriguez was too fast and elusive for Lester, although the aggressive Lester had a puncher's chance. In the opening round Lester trapped his slippery opponent in a corner and jarred him with a straight right to the chin but before the crowd's roar died down Luis countered with a right. The punch landed solidly and dropped Lester to his knees. Far behind and still gunning for a knockout, Lester hastened the chase in the 10th round but ran into a right to the jaw that sent him spinning to the canvas again. In between, Rodriguez gave the game Lester an artistic boxing lesson." -Oakland Tribune

- "Lester's very strong and punches hard, but I made him fight my fight. If I wasn't in good condition he would have knocked me out. I was never hurt but he never stopped coming. It was a tough fight." -Luis Rodriguez
- "I felt it was closer than the official scoring. I lost it in the clinches. The referee broke us too soon, instead of letting us fight our way out. I'd like a rematch." -Jimmy Lester
