Luis Rodriguez 147 lbs beat Johnny Gonsalves 143 lbs by UD in round 10 of 10

"Johnny Gonsalves again missed the gold ring and Luis Rodriguez of Cuba is winging his way back to Miami today with his second 10-round decision over the Oakland welterweight. Not that Gonsalves didn't try, but at 30 years of age and against a fast-punching whirlwind of a fighter, it was just too much for him last night at Oakland Auditorium. Gonsalves started out as if he meant business, catching Rodriguez with right hands to the head, until Rodriguez resorted to his favorite tactics, slugging for the body and looping overhand rights to Gonsalves' head. And from the 4th through the 7th round Rodriguez handed Gonsalves a thorough lacing. Gonsalves came to life in the 8th, but Rodriguez took the 9th and it was all the Cuban in the 10th." -Oakland Tribune

  • Unofficial Tribune scorecard - 7-3 Rodriguez
  • Rodriguez lost a point in the 8th round for low blows
  • Gonsalves' left eye was cut in the 2nd round
  • Attendance - 2,800
  • Gate - $7,510

  • "I haven't been fighting enough. Once every four months isn't enough to stay with a fighter like Rodriguez. I am going to ask for a fight again within a month." -Johnny Gonsalves, after stating he ran out of steam in the 4th round.
