"Sharp-shooting Luis Rodriguez resumes his march into the middleweight ranks after scoring an easy knockout in three rounds over Memo Ayon of Mexico. Rodriguez battered Ayon, the middleweight champion of Mexico, Friday night, so badly that the Mexican's handlers demanded that the bout be stopped. Referee Tommy Hart obliged and complimented Memo's supporters for good judgement. Ayon's right eye was slammed completely shut with a violent left hook in the 3rd, and the left eye was still bleeding profusely from repeated jabs in the 2nd round." -Associated Press
- Rodriguez was scheduled to fight again in 10 days in Las Vegas against Jose Assumpacao of Brazil, and he did so.
- Rodriguez was hoping for a title shot at world middleweight champ Joey Giardello, but promoter George Parnassus was looking to stage a rematch between Rodriguez and Rubin 'Hurricane' Carter. And he did so the following month.
