"Former world welterweight champion Luis Rodriguez knocked out Mexican middleweight champion Rafael Gutierrez in 2:59 of the 6th round Monday night to take a big step toward a title shot with Nino Benvenuti. Rodriguez, the top-ranked middleweight contender, caught Gutierrez with a right hook to put him on the canvas for the first and last time. Rodriguez started the round with a strong body attack and, when Gutierrez eventually lowered his arms, caught him with a right hook to the jaw. Gutierrez back-pedaled for about 20 seconds before Rodriguez landed the clincher." -United Press International
