Joni was stabbed to death in October 2001 during an argument with a stranger in his hometown of Duncan Village[1]. Joni, 24 at the time of his death, was planning a return to the ring after over a year out due to illness.

Joni was the younger brother of South African Lightweight title challenger Simphiwe Joni, who too was killed in an almost identical manner.
