Mando Ramos 135 lbs beat Pedro Carrasco 134 lbs by SD in round 15 of 15

"Mando Ramos of Los Angeles beat Pedro Carrasco of Spain on points to become the new world lightweight champion in their 3rd controversial WBC title fight Wednesday night. In this 3rd bout Ramos was declared the winner on a 15 round decision by a narrow margin of three points. Ramos was more aggressive than Carrasco and attacked with good combinations from beginning to the end of the fight. Carrasco went down twice, once in the 1st round and again in the 2nd round when Ramos sent terrific lefts and rights to the face and body of the Spaniard. Carrasco had a cut on the left eyebrow from the 2nd round and bled steadily to the end of the bout which was one of the most exciting ever seen in Madrid. The estimated 12,000 fans at the Sports Palace booed the decision in the belief Carrasco had been the winner, but Spanish boxing writers agreed in saying, 'the result was just and Ramos was a deserving winner.'" -Associated Press

  • After drinking a bottle of soda in his dressing room after the bout, Ramos was given a post-fight urinalysis in which was found traces of Benzedrine. Unknowing if it was from the soda, WBC President Ramon Velasquez ordered a 4th bout between the two after Ramos' signed defense against Chango Carmona of Mexico.

Post-fight comment

  • "I would hesitate to go to Spain again, not because we were mistreated or anything like that. But because of that amphetamines baloney. They were just trying to keep us from leaving with the title." -Jackie McCoy, Ramos' manager
