- Officially opened November of 1931 with a hockey game between the Maple Leafs (formerly the Toronto St. Pats) and the Blackhawks of Chicago. It supplanted the Mutual Street Arena as the top boxing venue in the city.
- First world title fight there was a bantamweight fight between Panama Al Brown and Emile (Spider) Pladner in 1932.
- Capacity: over 15,000 for hockey; at least 20,000 for boxing (standing room only).
