It began with an even first round with Rubio throwing alot of punches, and Cuevas slipping them, and both fighters landing some counter lefts and straight rights. In rounds two and three, Rubio picked up the pace, sending Cuevas to the canvas twice only to have both events called a slip. Cuevas tried to exchange bombs in ring center, but every time he did, Rubio landed accurate combinations that would send Cuevas on the retreat. Rubio began landing accurate combinations and backing up Cuevas, and in round four, Rubio bloodied the nose of Cuevas and was landed a great number of right hand leads. Cuevas landed a few good counter rights, but Rubio's jab continued to find its head target, turning the face of Cuevas into a bloody mess. At the end of round five, Cuevas' corner opted not to continue as he was taking too much punishment. Rubio was warned for low blows in rounds two and four, though Cuevas seemed unaffected. Welterweight contender Kermit Cintron was in attendance at ringside, having seen the professional debut of his brother Harold earlier. Referee: Steve Smoger.
