Lesperance was the silver medelist at the National Junior Olympics in 1979 and National Junior Olympic Champion in 1980. He Boxed for the U.S.A Boxing Team from 1982-84, while living in Colorado Springs at the Olympic Trianing Center. He was the first athlete to take part in Operation Gold. Lesperance was the United States National ABF Champion in 1982, at 106 pounds. He was the runner up at The 1984 Western Olympic Trials at 119 pounds.
