Mark Shaughnessy was a "well-known sporting man and mine owner" who claimed to have discovered World Heavyweight Champion Jack Johnson. A newspaper article, entitled "How Jack Johnson Started at Boxing," was published in the Nov. 25, 1911 Tacoma Daily News. Shaughnessy was living in Tacoma, WA, at this time. He claimed he discovered the 20-year-old, 110-pound Johnson 12 years earlier in a small Illinois town, when Shaughnessy was in town to box Reddy Brennan.
The Dec. 19 paper reported Shaughnessy's date-of-birth as being Dec. 18, 1863.
He had refereed the Victor McLaglen vs. Phil Schlossberg bout of May 28, 1908.
