"Marvin Johnson became the first three-time light heavyweight champion Sunday with a 7th round TKO over previously unbeaten Leslie Stewart of Trinidad for the vacant WBA title. Johnson started quickly in the opening round, opening a cut near Stewart's right eye and scoring with jabs to the head and body. Stewart fought back and cut Johnson over the right eye, but that gash never reopened. In the 6th round, Johnson landed strong left hands to Stewart's head and reopened the previous cut. When a Johnson left uppercut opened a gash above Stewart's left eye late in the 6th, referee Franco Priami called the fight doctor into the ring to study Stewart's blood-covered face. Stewart finished the round but took several solid punches from Johnson, whose right shoulder and trunks were covered with Stewart's blood. Priami stopped the bout a few seconds later." -United Press International

Post-fight comment

  • "I didn't have any intention to knock him out early. I just wanted to put pressure on him from the start. I found out I could connect with the left hand so I kept using it." -Marvin Johnson
