Maurice Thompson, also nicknamed "Curly Thompson" or "The Montana Kid," was born in Michigan in 1884. He moved to Butte, Montana to become a miner. Butte miners were very fond of boxing, so many big-name boxers appeared there--including future World Champion and Boxing Hall-of-Famer Stanley Ketchel.
Thompson soon became interested in becoming a boxer himself, and reportedly made his pro debut October 1903 against Kid Green (although BoxRec has documented a couple of earlier bouts for him). He fought Stanley Ketchel. Joe Wood took Thompson under his managerial wing in 1904.
By 1914, he had been in some 100 battles. Source (which also included what purported to be Thompson's complete fight record up to May 1914): [2]. See also, 26 Nov 1912 Ogden Evening Standard [3]; 25 March 1911 Salt Lake Tribune [4]
Thompson died in a car accident while on a hunting trip in 1930.
