  • Date: 1941-04-04
  • Location: Madison Square Garden, New York, New York, USA
  • Referee: Arthur Donovan

Nova was knocked down for a brief one count in the 4th from a Baer right hand. Baer was knocked down by a right for a nine count, after he got up he was knocked down again by a right hand, that sent him down again. Referee Donovan stopped the bout as the count was at two.

"Max Baer staggered to his corner after 2:18 of the 8th round last night, left eye puffed shut, lips gashed and blood trickling from his nose. Lou Nova, the man who was on the brink of the grave from blood poisoning a little over a year ago, had given Maxie an artistic going over, and had won on a TKO. Baer refused to commit himself about quitting the ring after they led him to his dressing room with his senses reeling from two right-hand jolts that sent him to the floor in the 8th round. But Ancil Hoffman, his manager, took one look at Maxie's face and said, "A man can't go on forever." Maybe not, however, in the 4th round it seemed that Baer was about to turn an amazing trick when he looped three long rights to Nova's jaw that dropped Lou for a count of one. But Nova got up and rushed back to the wars. It was Lou's fight then as his darting left jab closed Baer's left eye and in the 8th Nova shot across a right to the jaw that sent Maxie rolling under the ropes. He was up at nine and Nova smashed him with another right. This time Baer hit the deck mid-ring and before he could get off of one knee, referee Arthur Donovan stopped the fight." -United Press
