Max Minnich, of Alabama University, held the middleweight and light-heavyweight titles at college for two years. He then annexed the heavyweight championship although he scaled no more than 160 pounds. (College record: 16-0, with 9 KOs.)

As an amateur, he won the City light-heavyweight title in 1936. In 1937 he annexed the Golden Gloves title and was the runner-up for the National Championship. He ran up 30 wins in 32 starts as a Simon Pure, scoring 16 knockouts.
