Pryor started boxing at the age of 19 while attending Plattsburgh State University in upstate New York. Under the tutelage of Bob Miller, Michael competed 26 times in the amateurs, posting a 20-6 record. 2008 and 2009 were successful years for him as an amateur, winning the NYS Golden Gloves tournament as both a novice and an open-class fighter, respectively. He currently lives in Manassas, Virginia and is still heavily involved in Catholic education. He now serves as principal of Saint Timothy Catholic School in Chantilly.
