The Norwegian middleweight Roy Askvold (29) made his pro debut against Michel Blinker of Suriname/Netherlands. Askvold had a long amateur career with seven national titles and two Scandinavian titles. He was in the Rome Olympics 1960, losing his first fight to the Scot Willie Fisher (Bronze Medalist). Askvold had a reputation for being a knockout-king, but with his own glass jaw. His KO loss in 1961 to the later Swedish European champ Bo Högberg, while they were amateurs, was described as the ugliest KO in the history of Scandinavian boxing.
Askvold (75 kg) was a head shorter than the cool Blinker (also 75 kg). A short right hook brought Blinker down within a minute of the fight. He was up and backed away for a few rounds, reeling in the 3rd after new series from the debutant. In the 5th Blinker suddenly came to life when he brought the Norwegian down on his knees twice. But Askvold pulled it all together in the 6th and final round, attacking and hitting Blinker with solid punches, avoiding Blinker's slaps with the inside of the gloves.
Referee Frithjof Hansen awarded the fight on points to a happy debutant.
