Obituary
Mr. Michael J. "Mickey" DaBiere, 90, of Amsterdam, a former amateur and professional boxer, died Monday at St. Mary's Hospital, Amsterdam.
He was born on Nov. 17, 1911 in Amsterdam, the son of Clement and Maria SanFilippo DaBiere. Mr. DaBiere attended area schools and was a lifelong area resident.
He was employed for 53 years at the former Fitzgerald Bottling Works from age 10 until he retired in 1974 as a supervisor.
He was known as Mickey DeBerry during Amsterdam's Boxing Mecca years. He compiled a record of 88 amateur fights and 22 professional fights, winning some 99 encounters, many by the way of knockout, with one draw and four losses. He retired from the ring in 1952 after 19 years and became a licensed referee.
His picture and story appeared in the October 1946 issue of the National Ring Magazine which portrayed him as an up-and-coming fighter. He served as vice president of Ring 43 of the National Veteran Boxing Association, Utica, and was honored in 1983 by International Veteran Boxing Association Ring 26.
