- Date: 1935-09-16
- Location: Auditorium, Oakland, California, USA
- Referee: Eddie Burns 5-2
Montana had an edge in the bout, with cleaner punching, particularly with his left jab and left hook to the head. Wolgast for his part, forced the fight, though he missed many of his punches. It was felt that the fight was close until the 8th, when a stiff right from Montana, opened a bad cut over Wolgast's eye.
Once Wolgast was cut, Montana took the initiative and pounded Wolgast to take the 8th round decisively. Wolgast's corner was able to close the cut between rounds, however, Montana quickly reopenend the wound in the 9th round. Wolgast attempted to dance around the ring to avoid the charging Montana for the majority of the round.
In the 10th and final round, Montana reverted back to fighting as a counterpuncher and reopened Wolgast's cut, and cracked Wolgast with a solid right hand, that spun him around.
Though Montana claimed the World Flyweight Title, with this win, it was not universally recognized. Wolgast, the defending champion, had not made the Flyweight limit, or defended his title since July 1931. As would be expected, Wolgast struggled to get down to the 112 pound limit, and admitted that it had weakened him in the bout. Wolgast had been at 120 pounds, a week before the bout. to make weight, he claimed to have taken a steam bath everyday, sparred ten rounds, and had done three to four miles of roadwork.
Had Wolgast successfully defended his title against Montana, he said that he would have given up his crown anyway, since he did not want to make the Flyweight limit in the future.
