- At the close of the fifth, La Morte, walking falteringly to his corner, suddenly collapsed, falling head first to the canvas. Dr. William H. Walker, State Athletic Commission physician, determined he had suffered a spasm of the heart. La Morte was sent to the hospital as a precaution, where he received emergency treatment and was sent home. Referee Crowley announced that the knockout occurred in the sixth round, but Judge Mathison--who had helped to write the New York State Athletic Commission rules--insisted the KO should be scored in the fifth, due to an understanding that the one-minute rest between rounds is part of the preceding session, and the gong hadn't sounded to begin the sixth round.
