"Elisha Obed of Nassau, Bahamas, became the WBC world junior middleweight champion Thursday when Miguel de Oliveira of Brazil failed to come out for the 11th round of their title fight in Paris. Obed, the challenger, knocked down the Brazilian twice in the 10th round of their scheduled 15 rounder. When the bell rang for the 11th, de Oliveira stayed in his corner from his drubbing in the 10th. Obed went on the offensive in the 3rd round, landing a powerful right to the jaw that sent the Brazilian staggering backward. But de Oliveira fought back and as the fight continued he managed to land powerful rights and lefts. In the 8th, a straight left by the Brazilian shook Obed and he dropped one knee to the floor. By the 9th the 23 year old Obed bounced back and in the 10th sent de Oliveira down for an eight-count with a series of left and right hooks. The Brazilian got up only to walk into a buzzsaw of left hooks that sent him down again. When the bell rang for the 11th, de Oliveira could not get up from his stool and the referee declared the Bahamian the new champion." -Associated Press
