Mike became interested in boxing in 1961 while a soph in High School and entered the amateurs that same year winning the Pittsburgh City Recreation 110 pound title. Still as a flyweight he later won the Central and then Western Pennsylvania Flyweight championships. Mike had 15 amateurs fights, winning 14, 7 by kayo. Brother of fellow boxer Tony Mammarelli He was featured in the May 1964 issue of The Ring and the September 1964 issue of Boxing illustrated.
