"Veteran Mike Quarry handed 19 year old Pedro Soto his first ring loss last night, touching off a minor riot at MSG's Felt Forum. Quarry took a unanimous eight round verdict, but the Forum crowd was heavily for the young Puerto Rican, and when the decision was announced bottles were thrown, windows broken and fist fights flared among disappointed fans. Soto had begun strongly, pummeling Quarry and cutting his eye, but Mike managed to blunt the attack and won the match on superior infighting." -United Press International
- This bout had to be scheduled for eight rounds due to the fact that the 19 year old Soto would not turn 20 until December 30th. Under NY state law, a boxer under the age of 20 is prohibited from fighting 10 rounders.
