Michael Vincent Vartuli Sr., 78, died Thursday, June 22, 2000, at Sentara Hampton General Hospital. Born on December 16, 1921, in Burlington, Vt., he had lived in Hampton since 1962.

He retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1968 as a Tech Sergeant. In the Air Force, he was awarded the Golden Gloves Award for his boxing abilities. He was the owner and manager of South Hampton Exxon from 1968 to 1982. He continued to be an avid mechanic until his final days. He enjoyed fishing and weekend trips to Dover, Atlantic City and Harrington.
