"Nevada State champion Mike Weaver won the USBA championship Thursday night by stopping California State heavyweight champion Stan Ward. Under the advice of Dr. Donald Romeo, referee Joey Curtis stopped the fight after the 9th round when Ward complained of double vision. The bout was scheduled for 12 rounds. There were no knockdowns in the bout at the Sahara Hotel Space Center." -Associated Press

• This win was supposed to set up a rematch between Weaver and LeRoy Jones with Weaver's USBA title on the line as well as Jones' NABF title. However, the bout never materialized.
