After the Second Anglo-Boer war Williams joined the South African Constabulary in Johannesburg and engaged in several inter-divisional boxing bouts during that time. In 1903 he defeated Syd Hughes for the vacant heavyweight championship of South Africa. Williams had a well-deserved reputation for questionable tactics and a wild temper which cost him more than his share of fights on fouls.
