"Monroe Brooks punched his way to a 4th round knockout victory Thursday night over Aurelio Muniz to successfully defend his California state lightweight title at the Olympic Auditorium. Brooks started cautiously and Muniz led the 1st round. But Brooks, of Los Angeles, opened up in the 2nd and 3rd rounds and belted Muniz with a volley of a shot at the start of the 4th round, sending the San Jose fighter through the bottom ropes onto the ring apron. After a mandatory eight count, Brooks blasted Muniz with rights and lefts to the head and body until referee George Latka halted the fight at 1:58 of the 4th round of the scheduled 12 round fight." -Long Beach Press-Telegram

  • Brooks was overweight by over a pound at the morning weigh-in, but made it on his second attempt.
