Spakow was Jewish per the Hank Kaplan archives. Spakow was forced into retirement in 1940 when Romania formed a fascist government under Antonescu-but he survived WW2 and emigrated to Israel in 1947 where he was unsuccessful in reviving his career as a professional fighter. Faced racist attacks on his professional career from 1936 until 1940 where he was forced to leave Romania. From a article on Spakow from The National Library of Israel July 18, 2018. Spakow had an amazing national career as a fighter in Romania holding the Middleweight and Heavyweight Romanian titles from 1928/29 until forced to flee for his life in 1940. He also held the Romanian LightHeavyweight Title from 1933 to 1938 while simultaneously holding the Middleweight and Heavyweight titles. He defended these national titles numerous times. Spakow had only one opportunity to compete for a European title and he was defeated by Marcel Thil in November of 1930 for the Euopean (EBU) Middleweight Title by knockout in the seventh rd.
