Medical Situation

BBBofC champion Nick Blackwell, in his third defense, incurred with a large swelling above his left eye in his bout with Chris Eubank Jr., collapsed in the ring during ringside doctor's inspection in the tenth round, and was immediately taken to the nearest hospital still conscious, removed on a stretcher with oxygen. According to British Boxing Board of Control General Secretary Robert Smith, Blackwell was placed by doctors into a medically induced coma due to a head injury and bleed. Surgery was an option, when Blackwell was in critical condition. Blackwell's career is probably over due to the minor bleed on the skull incurred (not on the brain) which nonetheless required Blackwell to be placed in a medically induced coma for seven days. Blackwell was awoken from his medically induced coma on April 4, 2016, was fully conscious and talking coherently. Blackwell is fortunately expected to make a full recovery.[1]
