In an important pay-per-view televised heavyweight bout with the winner figuring heavily into upcoming unification bouts with WBO-IBF champion Wladimir Klitschko and his brother WBC champion Vitali Klitschko, David 'The Hayemaker' Haye, 29, of London, United Kingdom, won the WBA Heavyweight title with a twelve round majority decision over Nicolay 'The Russian Giant' Valuev of St. Petersburg, Russia, making his second defense. The bout closely mirrored Valuev's 12 round decision title bouts with Ruslan Chagaev and Evander Holyfield, excepting that Haye landed consistently and abit more often to just win this bout. Using a circle your opponent, stick and move strategy, Haye, 23-1, 21 kos, did not provide Valuev, now 50-2, 34 kos, with a target. Valuev was forced into a chase and jab strategy, and though he threw alot of jabs, his opponent moved too fast to be hit for the first three rounds. Valuev pressed the attack in rounds four through seven, though, landing jabs more often as Haye now missed more. In rounds nine, ten and eleven, Valuev continued to chase and jab, but got hit consistently with counter right power punches thrown by Haye. In round twelve, Valuev was both jabbing and 'going for broke', but Haye remained an elusive target throwing counters. In the final minute, Haye landed a powerful combination followed by alot of hard punches that put Valuev on shaky legs and won Haye the round-and the bout-in what was otherwise a close heavyweight championship bout difficult to score. Both fighters fought a fair clean bout. Haye said he injured his right hand in round 2 or 3, and relied on his left from then on. To experienced Valuev's credit, Haye tried and failed to 'lure him in' all night along the ropes.
