"Heavyweight Billy Gilliam of Orange, N.J., boasted a split decision today over Nino Valdes of Cuba after an uneventful 10-round main event here at the War Memorial Arena. Valdes opened the bout with two sharp rights to Gilliam's jaw and from then on the match was mostly a dull affair with Valdes being called several times for low blows. The fans were treated to a brief flurry in the 6th round which began when Gilliam caught Valdes with a left to the chin that staggered the Cuban. There were no knockdowns." -United Press
