- Date: 1959-03-04
- Location: Auditorium, Miami Beach, Florida, USA
- Referee: Cy Gottfried 65-69
- Judge: Gus Jacobson 63-69
- Judge: Barry Pearlman 65-67
Valdes was knocked down three times.
"Nino Valdes, fat at 224, was belted into utter exhaustion and referee Cy Gottfried wisely stopped the fight after Nino had fallen to the canvas for the 3rd time from his surprise conqueror Charlie Powell from San Diego, Calif. During the first five rounds Nino held the upper hand although he was cut over the left eye in the 3rd. Valdes kept the action at close quarters where he was able to use his skill to outfight his foe. However, Powell began to whack away at the chubby sides of Valdes and soon the Cuban was grabbing and holding. In the 7th, a left swing sent Nino tumbling through the ropes onto the ring apron and scrambled back into the ring at the count of four. As the 8th got under way Charlie sent Valdes down again with a flurry and when Nino arose Powell swarmed in on him and Nino went down again for another count. After getting up Nino went down again and the referee stopped it at 2:03 of the 8th." -Ring Magazine, May 1959 issue
- This bout was meant as a tuneup for Valdes for a proposed rematch in Denver with Zora Folley, which then failed to materialize.
