"Nino Valdes, of Havana, chief claimant to a chance at Rocky Marciano's heavyweight crown, scored a kayo last night in Huntington, West Virginia, but added little to his prestige. He twice floored Jack Flood, a journeyman from Spokane, Wash., once in the 1st round and again in the 2nd before putting him away for good in the 7th of a scheduled 10-rounder. The end came at 2:37 of the round on a stiff overhand right to the jaw after Valdes had led nearly all the way. Flood, winner of a dozen of his 24 fights, said he absorbed his worst punch, aside from the finisher, in the 3rd. Before that, he had gone down for an eight-count in the 1st from two right hooks. Again in the 2nd round, he was dropped to his knees by a right cross but he grabbed the ropes and pulled himself up. There was no count." -Associated Press
