Nino Valdes 213 lbs beat Pat McMurtry 188 lbs by TKO at 2:39 in round 1 of 10
- Date: 1958-12-19
- Location: Madison Square Garden, New York, New York, USA
- Referee: Harry Kessler
"Big Nino Valdes, 213, of Cuba tagged Pat McMurtry, 188, of Tacoma, Wash., with the first knockout of his career at 2:39 of the first round Friday night in MSG. Referee Harry Kessler stopped the nationally televised and broadcast bout Friday night because of New York state's 3-knockdown provision. He ruled that McMurtry, who never had been on the canvas before, was officially floored 3 times. Everyone admitted that Kessler acted correctly in stopping the massacre when he did. Pat was in a floundering stupor at the time." -United Press International
- This bout took place when negotiations broke down between Floyd Patterson and Valdes for a December 12th title fight in MSG.
- Actor George Raft and associates wired Cus D'Amato an offer of $400,000 for Patterson to defend against Valdes in Havana in February.
Post-fight comment
- "Sure, I'm considering it. When any man offers that kind of money you consider it." -Cus D'Amato, Patterson's manager, on the Valdes offer.
