Quarless was a fast and hard puncher, 7 of his 11 KO's were in the first round. However he lost 12 times and was stopped in eight of them, four times in the first round.

Quarless fought in three final eliminators for the British heavyweight title but lost all three, Horace Notice stopped him in seven rounds in 1985 and Hughroy Currie beat him on points in 1987 over 12 rounds and in 1988 over 10 rounds.

Quarless holds a points win over former heavyweight world champion John Tate (WPTS 10) however it was the final fight of Tate's career when he was way past his best.

Quarless stopped unbeaten Swedish heavyweight Anders Eklund (6-0-1) in roughly 72 seconds of the first round in 1983, dropping him three times. Eklund would go on to become European heavyweight champion. Quarless followed this by stopping former British and Commonwealth champion John L Gardner in three rounds less than a month later however Gardner was past his best and never boxed again.

Michael Spinks used Quarless as a sparring partner when he was training for Larry Holmes.
