"The referee intervened in the 54th second of the fourth round of the fight between Norman Dwyer, West Indies, and Billy Desmond, Preston. Tipping the scale at 12st. 6lb., Hesmond overshadowed the coloured man. Dwyer, who weighed-in at 12st. 1lb., crouched on his knees on several occasions in the second and third rounds to protestations from the crowd and although knowing that the odds were staked heavily against him, continued to take punhisment until the fourth, when on being put down for the third time, the referee stopped the contest and awarded Hesmond the decision."
