Wally Hally lost to Norment Quarles by TKO at 1:10 in round 6 of 10

  • Date: 1938-11-01
  • Location: Turner's Arena, Washington, District of Columbia, USA
  • Referee: Ray Bowen

According to the 1939 edition of the Boxing News Record, p. 13, as written by Dick O'Brien for the Washington Herald newspaper:

Not so long ago in Washington, Wally Hally was boxing Norment Quarles. Quarles' style completely baffled Hally who couldn't get going. He was punched around pretty good, but not once was he off his feet.
Like a bombshell the referee of the contest stepped in, waved Quarles to his corner and awarded Norment a technical knockout. The fans yelled murder. The fans are always smarter than boxing officials, it seems to me. They wanted to see the fight go ten rounds. Some of them thought Hally would come around in the late sessions and others thought Norment would unload him in two or more rounds.
This question was never decided and the fans yelled bloody murder, leaving the Arena in disgust.
