Summary
Maskaev started to take advantage over neglecting Hawkins in round two. He used his jab to keep Hawkins outside and staggered him with some well-timed power shots at the end of the round. However, in round three, Hawkins came back with several effective attacks of his own. Maskaev had been pinned to the ropes at one moment but Hawkins failed to capitalize on that. In rounds four and five Maskaev turned a tide once again overworking his defensive-minded foe while seeking an opportunity to land one huge shot. On the other hand, Hawkins used his clinching skills well and worked with his head way too low, forcing the referee to issue several warnings.
In the sixth stanza, Hawkins was rocked by Maskaev bombs on several occasions and at the end of a three-minute span he had seemingly injured his right shoulder. However, this minor injury proved to be non-critical for Hawkins health as he continued to fight on. In rounds seven and eight both fighters had their moments but it was Maskaev, who was the more active of two. In round nine and ten both fighters preferred to stay out of trouble trying to make the work done with one or two offensive bursts.
