In a close bout, former WBC heavyweight Champion Oliver McCall, 44, scored a ten round unanimous decision over Lance Whitaker, 37. Ex-champ McCall, 54-9, 37 kos, Chicago, Illinois, won this bout on a knockdown of Whitaker, 34-6-1, 28 kos, Van Nuys, California, in the first, which proved the difference in a fight overwise difficult to score. McCall 'emptied his guns' in the first in an attempt to get Whitaker out of there, and nearly succeeded, decking Whitaker once, and nearly kayoing him twice when Whitaker was in big trouble. By round two, though, McCall looked out of gas, and spent most of the next five rounds clinching and grabbing the battered Whitaker with an occasional jab here or there from both men. McCall appeared to win the seventh and the eighth rounds on points with consistent jab combinations, but his punches lacked power. The ninth and the tenth were close, with both men throwing combinations. McCall was not bothered by his 6'8" opponent, and clearly 'tested the waters' at the opening bell to see if his tall opponent could fight back.
