According to a news item in the July 20, 1953 edition of the Pittsburgh Press on Newspapers.com, the police reported that Otto Blackwell, 42 years of age and a "former Hill District boxer," was shot five times and killed by his 19-year-old wife, Velma, during a quarrel in their apartment at 1 a.m. yesterday (July 19, 1953). She told the police that the shooting took place due to a series of quarrels over his beating of their only child. In 1945, Otto Blackwell had been acquitted of shooting another boxer, "Seebee" Thomas, with a pistol on the grounds of self-defense.

At the time of his death, he was working for the Pittsburgh Coke and Chemical Company.
