McFarland was originally from Wichita, Kansas. He later joined the Air Force, and was stationed at Davis-Monahan AFB in Tucson, Arizona. As an amateur he compiled a record of 82-8-5, winning the Arizona Golden Gloves championship as a featherweight in 1948 and as a lightweight in 1949. He reportedly won his first twelve bouts, before losing to Lawton DiSoso.
