The Boston Herald described the decision as "Probably the worst decision in the latter-day history of Boston boxing ..." The Boston Herald' scored the bout 99-91 for DeMarco.

"Stylish Johnny Gonzalves of Oakland, Calif., was awarded a decidedly unpopular split decision over rough Paddy DeMarco of Brooklyn, in their 10-round lightweight feature bout tonight at Mechanics Building. DeMarco was the aggressor from start to finish but, only one of the judges voted in his favor. Known as the 'Billy Goat' DeMarco rushed Gonzalves from start to finish and gave him a lusty two-fisted body beating in each session. Gonzalves was limited to counter-punching and in the minds of most of the spectators, had little success in so doing. There never was the slightest danger of a knockdown and the only visible damage in either was a slight cut over the bridge of DeMarco's nose." -Associated Press

  • Unofficial AP scorecard - 9-1 DeMarco (the AP scored in rounds)
  • Attendance - 1,428
  • This bout was nationally televised but blacked out in the New England area.

Post-fight comments

  • "I never thought it was close at any stage." -Paddy DeMarco
  • "DeMarco did a lot of butting and that must have counted against him. I was confident all the way that I was beating him from long range." -Johnny Gonzalves
