- Commonwealth (British Empire) Middleweight Title (5th defense by McAteer)
Pat McAteer, who had been the British and Empire middleweight boxing champion for the past three years, was surprisingly easily beaten on Thursday night by Dick Tiger in their scheduled 15-round round Empire title fight at Liverpool Stadium. McAteer, having taken considerable punishment, was finally knocked out in the ninth round by an opponent who had been given little chance by the critics.
McAteer, who was defending his title for the fifth time, was hurt badly in the sixth round by a left hook, and although he fought back desperately, the weight of Tiger's punching steadily slowed him down.
In the ninth round McAteer was in trouble from a left hook to the chin and Tiger quickly ended the contest with a right.
Tiger was regarded as being off his form when he drew with the champion in November, but this time he proved his superiority. He took McAteer's best punches without flinching as he looked for the opportunity to use his own powerful left and right hooks. When he did McAteer was in immediate difficulties, though he fought courageously.
For the first three rounds McAteer looked cool and competent. He let Tiger make the running, but kept him at a safe distance with a pecking left hand to the face. In the fourth round the pace began to quicken, McAteer pinned on the ropes, did well to push his chin away from a strong right swing, but still he did not look unduly worried.
The Nigerian kept at McAteer from the sixth round and into the seventh, when both scorned defense, he made his opponent tire with his heavy punching. McAteer tried to retaliate but he was too weak, and after a barrage of blows from Tiger in the ninth round, the fight ended.
