Patsy Cardiff, a Canadian by birth, was nicknamed "The Peoria Giant" by his first manager, Parson Davies, from his early days in Chicago, although Cardiff made Minneapolis, Minnesota his home for the bulk of his career, and called himself a "Minnesota guy." He later moved with his wife to California, and then Oregon, where he owned his own business as a saloon keeper and a home mover. He died at a mental asylum in Salem, Oregon.

In August of 1885 Cardiff toured with a boxing exhibition in the company of his friend Patsy Mullen.
