According to his profile in the May 1959 issue of The Ring, Wright lost but a dozen of 138 amateur fights, winning 42 by kayo. In 1954 he won the National and International Golden Gloves middleweight titles. In 1955-56, he won the National AAU title. Paul became a machine operator after graduating high school. Later he joined the Air Force (hence the appellative "Fly") and served four years and 3 months, part of the time in French Morroco, where he displayed his ring skills in boxing shows. He turned pro under the guidance of Cus D'Amato in March 1957.
He should not be confused with Trenton, New Jersey's Paul Wright who fought professionally from 1951 to 1971.
