The son of a United States Naval officer, Paul Field grew up in Connecticut, and was involved in boxing during his own 26-year Naval career (1967-93). He began his professional officiating career with the Japan Boxing Commission (1976-83), and worked 21 Japanese/Oriental title bouts. As of 2010, Field serves as a pro and amateur boxing referee, judge, promoter and matchmaker in the Pacific Northwest area of the United States. He has been the treasurer of the Pacific Northwest Amateur Boxing Association since 1995.
