A left hook knocked down Basilio down for an eight-count in the 13th round. Basilio was floored for a second time in the 15th round, on another left hook. Basilio would announce his retirement on April 25, 1961.

"Artful Paul Pender, 160, retained his middleweight title tonight, using his rapier-like left hand as a double-edged weapon for a 15-round decision over stubborn Carmen Basilio. Carmen, 159, had Pender in trouble in the 2nd round with a brutal right to the side of the head. Pender took a flurry and appeared to be hanging on from instinct. A Basilio right hand opened a cut over Paul's left eyelid in the 4th and Carmen was able to keep reopening the wound throughout the struggle. Pender, however, started the blood gushing from Basilio's nose in the 5th, which also was reopened later. After the 2nd round, Pender, four years younger at 30, slowly wore down Basilio, turning the left into a battering attack weapon. The ceaseless left hand barrage finally took its toll. Pender sent Carmen down with a left in the 13th. Carmen partially fell across the ropes and went down on one knee. Basilio went down again in the 15th - taking a nine-count - from a Pender left hook in the 15th. The decision was unanimous." -Associated Press

Post-fight comments

  • "It was more a flash sting. I recovered and came right out of it. Carmen's a good worker, who takes a good whacking and keeps on coming. I knew he was going to be tough." -Paul Pender, discussing getting caught in the 2nd round.
  • "I couldn't fight with the left hook from then on. If I'd had a left hook, I think I could have beat him." -Carmen Basilio, claiming he hurt his left shoulder in the 4th round.
