Percy Pugh 147 lbs beat Dick DiVeronica 149 lbs by SD in round 10 of 10

Percy Pugh, 147, New Orleans, La., gained a split ten-round nod over Dick DiVeronica, 149, Canastota, NY., in a rough bout at the Civic Center, that was close enough to draw some howls from the crowd and bring the boys back for a rematch in December.

Pugh put his speed of hand and foot to good use as he came on in the late rounds to earn the verdict in the eyes of referee Terry Moore and judge Benny Goldstein, who had it 46-44 for him. The other judge, Tom Kelly, voted for Dick by a 48-45 margin.

DiVeronica enjoyed a big third round when he backed Pugh into the ropes and staggered him with a left hook to the body followed by a pair of rights to the head and Percy was rubber-legged at the bell.

Pugh's big round was the seventh when he nailed Dick with a stiff left hook, that made DiVeronica back off and shake his head. Percy followed up with a right uppercut-left hook combination that made Dick hold on real tight.

DiVeronica rallied in the last round as he swarmed all over Pugh in a rousing finish. (Source: Boxing Illustrated Ringside report, January 1969, page 35).
