From The New York Times, March 13, 1986:
After eight professional bouts, Pernell Whitaker, the Olympic lightweight champion, is unbeaten but has suffered his share of injuries. The boxer, who was out four months after breaking his right foot in November, has now learned that he broke his left hand in his comeback victory over John Montes last Sunday and will be out as long for as six months.
The injury, which was not diagnosed as a fracture until yesterday, occurred in the fourth round of the 10-round Montes fight, forcing the left-handed Whitaker to use his right almost exclusively for the rest of the bout. Whitaker, who lost two scheduled bouts as a result of the foot injury, is to undergo surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital tomorrow.
