"It was a rough, mauling encounter but devoid of spectacular incidents. Cerkan showed considerable improvement over his previous bouts here, particularly in the use of a left to the body, but Gross' habit of fighting from a shell prevented Pete from showing to particular advantage. Gross occasionally came from his shell with sweeping swings at Cerkan's head, but he landed few of these and when they did land didn't damage the Pe Ell blond. Cerkan hurt Gross with the first punch of the scrap, a digging left to the body and also had him groggy in the fifth round from punches to the head.
